The process was truthfully at times a bit exhausting, but I found it worthwhile as it is rare to have the opportunity to observe life so transparently. While her writing is incredibly detailed and full of depth, I found myself pausing periodically to highlight, take notes, and delve into introspective thoughts. I have never read Plath’s published poems but I do intend to and can imagine they are filled with even more grace and thoughtfulness. Regardless, her journals prove her core values and emotions continue to be timeless and just as relevant today. While critics have voiced their opinions of Plath from both ends of the spectrum from disdain to admiration, there is without a doubt Plath and her writing are multidimensional and creates a unique experience for each reader. Taking her life at such a young age, many readers such as myself are left to ponder the myriad of possibilities her life could have become. “Writing breaks open the vaults of the deadĪnd the skies behind which the prophesying angels hide.”Īs much as we know about Plath, her demise remains shrouded in ambiguity. We all have a story, and Plath shows that sometimes, simply recapturing the moments as they come can form a work that is accomplished in itself.

Whether she was joyfully celebrating the acceptance of her publications or drowning from the fatigue of her toxic overthinking, it was her intention to capture it all. However, regardless of where she was in life, she channeled her experiences into her journals and that is what made reading her words feel so alive and relatable. Plath was her harshest critic, and never quite satisfied with the amount of effort she was putting into her writing. She struggled through many of the same obstacles we face today the uncertainty of her career, the trials of love, a troubling relationship with her mother, and deep-seated insecurities that drove her towards a state of poor mental health. Living her life in search of meaning, purpose, and love.
